Isaiah's Nightmares

Isaiah has really been having problems with nightmares lately and I'm running out of ideas of how to handle it. Previously a great sleeper, Isaiah used to be able to just go to sleep on his own with no problem. Now he will scream and scream when we lay him down to bed unless one of us sits in the rocking chair next to the bed until he passes out. Even after he finally goes to sleep, he is waking up at least once during the night from what I can only guess to be a nightmare. I've left him to try to self soothe himself back to sleep, but he won't. He actually screamed and called for us for more than 30 minutes one night before I came to the conclusion that it wasn't going to happen. The same technique usually works to get him to fall back asleep - rocking in the chair for a few minutes and then I put him to bed while I sit in the chair until he falls asleep. We have a bedtime routine that has been working well for months now, but all of a sudden this is becoming a nightly problem. Any ideas?
