Lost

Today I experienced the most terrifying 20 (or so) minutes of my life.  I lost my son.

I'd been thinking about bringing the boys to the Madison Children's Museum for a few weeks now and things finally slowed down a bit downtown after the recent protests, so I left the house today with high hopes for a really fun day. Things started off pretty well, despite the fact that there were multitudes of little people running around everywhere.  Trying to keep track of where my two firecrackers were at all times was next to impossible.

Micah "planted" vegetables.

Both of them ran through a dinosaur bone lined walkway.

The musicians managed to grab Micah's attention...

...and he even joined the band by shaking a little egg!

After playing downstairs for a while, I decided to take the boys upstairs to see what the second level had to offer.  In retrospect, this was probably my biggest mistake.  Isaiah immediately checked out this huge LEGO station that had moving parts when buttons were pushed.

He spent a good few minutes walking around this station, pushing every button and examining what intricate movements were made.  I turned around for a moment to take this photo of Micah.

When I turned around, Isaiah was gone.  Honestly, I didn't think much of it at first because I assumed he was just checking out any one of the many other activities in the nearby area.  I followed Micah around for a couple minutes and had to shatter his dreams of playing like the 7 year olds.  After about 4 minutes or so, I started to feel a little apprehensive because I had made a full circuit of the second floor and Isaiah was nowhere in sight.

I hefted 32 pound (give or take) Micah into my arms and started really looking for my missing son.  Micah screamed and wriggled and fought me every step of the way, which only elevated my freak out level.  I checked every single square inch of that second floor....twice.  After about 10 minutes or so, I was full on panicking.  There were literally hundreds of kids running around and I feared that I was just missing him over and over.  Eventually, I headed back downstairs in case he had wandered down the steps.

I first looked over by our coats to see if maybe he had returned to them.  I looped around by the cafe area and then finally returned to the first play area we had visited.  By this time, my little boy had been missing from my sight for about 20 minutes and I was starting to lose it. Should I go report it to the desk?  How do you even go about finding a three year old kid when there are about 200 other kids who look just like him swirling all around you?

And then he was there.  I turned my head to the right and there was my Isaiah, standing over by the water play area.  He was bawling his head off and was standing near two moms who were trying to console him.  I set Micah down, ran to Isaiah, and threw my arms around my crying boy.  I took a second to notice the "nice of you to finally show up" looks I was getting from the women standing above me, but I was so focused on the feeling of finding Isaiah that I really didn't care too much.  I picked him up and brought him over by Micah so I could try to calm us both down.

I scolded him, hugged him, reminded him how important it was to stay near me, hugged him some more, and finally told him how much I loved him and how happy I was to find him safe.  We went up to eat the lunch I brought along and my hands were shaking as I handed out the sandwiches and Goldfish crackers.

Has this ever happened to you?  I'm not exaggerating when I say it was easily one of the scariest experiences of my life.  It was literally impossible for me to keep watch on both kids at all times.  There's no way we will be returning to the museum until the boys are older and when I can have at least one more adult with me to keep eyes on them.  Losing Isaiah was enough to scare me away for quite some time.

It was one of the worst days I have had in recent memory.  I felt like the worst parent ever.  Please tell me I'm not the only one this has happened to!

Project Life Tuesday - March Week Four

Hello and welcome to Project Life Tuesday! I am taking a photo every day in 2011 and putting them together in an album to create a unique keepsake of this year for our family.  Be sure to check in on what others are doing with their projects over at The Mom Creative!

Sunday, March 20th - I can't think of many other things Isaiah would rather do than to have an intense lightsaber fight with his Daddy.  Judging by his expression, I'd say Evan kind of enjoys it too!
Photobucket

Monday, March 21st - After I successfully got both Isaiah and Micah down for solid naps (YAY!!!), I celebrated with some "me time" while they slept.  A big glass of milk, a bag of Oreos, and a new book that had freshly arrived on my doorstep from Amazon.  By the way, I highly recommend you read Heaven is for Real - rocked my world!
Photobucket

Tuesday, March 22nd - I had no choice but to bring the boys with my to rehearsal today, but they actually were really well behaved (for a 3 year old and 18 month old)!  Micah alternated between running around in the seats and sitting on the stage and "coloring."
Photobucket

Wednesday, March 23rd - Such a copy-cat!  If you look closely, you can see the bobby pin in Micah's hand that he's attempting to put in his hair.  Sorry, baby!  I think you'll need to grow a little more hair first.
Photobucket

Thursday, March 24th - We recently discoverd that the boys love smoothies!  Isaiah likens his to ice cream and Micah gobbles his up so fast that I'm not even convinced he actually tastes it.
Photobucket

Friday, March 25th - My boss asked me to take some new photos of the pies for the restaurant's website.  It can be tough to deny my sweet tooth sometimes when I'm walking by these beauties all day.
Photobucket

Saturday, March 26th - My car is fixed finally, so we met up with my in-laws at Culver's so we could swap vehicles.  The sting of losing "Grandpa's van" was eased with supper at his favorite restaurant and a visit with Grandpa and Grandma!
Photobucket

It should be interesting to see what kind of photos Spring Break brings to next week's Project Life!  See you soon!

Disclosure:  I used an Amazon Associates link in this post.  Basically, it means that if you were to click on it and buy the book I liked up, I would earn a comission of about 2 cents or so.  Just lettin' you know!

Two More Minutes

My friend Delane has a blog called "Let Me Hold You Longer."  As I was putting Isaiah to bed tonight, I couldn't help but think about how she really hit the nail on the head with that title.  My boy is almost too big to even fit in my lap now, but he was curled up with me and had his little head nestled into my neck.  As I rested my head on his and squeezed him a little tighter in the dark, I couldn't help but think, "I'm going to hold him just a little longer."  As soon as that thought went through my mind, my little boy whispered to me, "You cuddle with me two more minutes, Mommy?"

What I won't give to have those moments back in 10 years when he wants nothing to do with me!

Project Life Tuesday - March Week Three

Hello and welcome to Project Life Tuesday! I am taking a photo every day in 2011 and putting them together in an album to create a unique keepsake of this year for our family.  Be sure to check in on what others are doing with their projects over at The Mom Creative!

Sunday, March 13th - Evan caught this shot of Isaiah.  What a handsome guy!
Photobucket

Monday, March 14th - This pack of onesies was on sale for only $3.99 and I just couldn't resist taking them home.  Little baby girl clothing is so cute!  Even if I don't end up getting to keep them for this baby, I'll definitely be able to give them as a gift.
Photobucket

Tuesday, March 15th - Isaiah took an epic nap today where I actually had to go rouse him.  Before waking him up, I managed to sneak a photo of my little guy sleeping.
Photobucket

Wednesday, March 16th - Today was the first somewhat mild day of the coming spring and the boys and I just had to spend some time playing outside.  They enjoyed drawing on the driveway with chalk and Micah ended up getting a lot of it all over his pants, shoes, and coat.
Photobucket

Thursday, March 17th - With the nice weather teasing us, Evan had to assemble the second Big Wheel the boys got for Christmas.  Now they each have a "bicycle" to ride outside!
Photobucket

Friday, March 18th - What is it that's so cool about tying on the dish towel and playing "Superman?"  My boys just love it.
Photobucket

Saturday, March 19th - The first flower of the spring just popped up in my flower bed (a crocus, I think?).  Isaiah and Micah were just enthralled with that single bloom and were fascinated by the tulip plants that are starting to shoot up.
Photobucket

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you're enjoying Project Life!

A Couple Firsts

On the way to Culver's tonight, Isaiah asked "Are we there yet?" for the very first time.  I can only assume that is the first of many, many such questions in the future.

I felt the baby move for the first time today!  Amazing how each subsequent pregnancy, I have been able to detect those movements earlier on, but this little one is strong.  I didn't just feel a flutter...I felt a kick.

Toilet Talk

I about died when Isaiah struck up this little conversation with me while he sat on the toilet.  Don't worry, it's nothing gross!

Isaiah:  Mommy, I go to school!

Me:  No, sweetie.  You were at Sarah's house today, not school.

Isaiah:  No Mommy.  Someday I grow up and get bigger!  Then I go to school!

Me:  Yes!  That's right!  In a couple years, you'll be a little more grown up and you will get to go to school.  Are you excited?

Isaiah: Uh huh!  And I go to school, I ride on school bus!  I say good-bye to you, Mommy and then I get on school bus to go to school and learn!  All by myself!

Me:  (dumbfounded and tearing up now)  Yes, baby.  That's right.  Mommy can't go to school with you.  You'll get to ride on the school bus like a big boy and you'll learn so much.

Isaiah:  Yup, I get new books too!  It gonna be awesome!  I all done.  You wipe my butt now, please?

Thank God we still have a couple more years!

Gag Order

Here's the problem with having this blog: People read it.  Most of the time, this is a wonderful thing!  I love that I can ask for help about my toddler's sleep troubles and get a response.  I love being able to share photos, funny stories, or random stuff with all of you.  It makes me feel like someone is actually listening, like my feeling and experiences matter, like I can connect with others.

The problem comes when I desperately want to share how I feel about something that is truly important, but I feel that I can't put my honest opinion out there....because people will read it.  Particular people - people I run into at work, at school, at the grocery store.  I don't want to pretend to believe something I don't, but I also don't want to put myself in the position to lose friendships, get my tires slashed, or hurt my chances at perhaps getting a job down the road.

That's the funny thing about blogging.  We use it as an outlet to share and vent, but every so often we have to check ourselves and realize that everything we publish on the Internet is written in ink and cannot be erased.  In some situations (and political climates), it is sometimes just better to write nothing at all.  It certainly isn't easy to feel like your opinion isn't the "right" one so it is therefore too dangerous to share.  As a matter of fact, it's downright frustrating.

It's like I'm walking on eggshells all the time, including on my virtual home.

Project Life Tuesday - March Week Two

Hello and welcome to Project Life Tuesday! I am taking a photo every day in 2011 and putting them together in an album to create a unique keepsake of this year for our family.  Be sure to check in on what others are doing with their projects over at The Mom Creative!

Sunday, March 6th - Evan and I got to go out on a long awaited date night tonight and I completely forgot to take a photo during dinner, so I had to settle for this awful, dark shot of the movie theater where we saw "The King's Speech."  Excellent movie!
Photobucket

Monday, March 7th - Isaiah came home with a balloon from daycare today so I had to dig another one out of my birthday party stash to even the score for Micah.  After watching me blow it up, he kept trying to copy me.  His little puffed up cheeks in this photo just kill me!
Photobucket

Tuesday, March 8th - Once in a while, Evan will have to bring some work home with him and since I realized I hadn't taken a photo yet.....here we go.  :)
Photobucket

Wednesday, March 9th - Micah abandoned the spoon for a much more direct method of eating his yogurt at lunch today.
Photobucket

Thursday, March 10th - The boys just love to "play Toy Story!"  Isaiah does a great job reinacting scenes from the movie with his toys.  It's amazing how many of the lines he remembers!
Photobucket

Friday, March 11th - It was wonderful.  The kiddos colored together at the counter for a solid 10 minutes before Micah started throwing them all over the floor.  They had fun though!
Photobucket

On a side note, I don't have a photo of the quake/tsunami in Japan for my Project Life book, but I did print out a news story from Yahoo to include in a 8.5x11 page protector in this week.  I also slipped in a print out of my recent blog post about Micah's struggles to sleep lately.

Saturday, March 12th - When I put on my favorite T-shirt and the one pair of maternity jeans that actually fits (too bad they have HUGE holes in them) it was crazy how all of a sudden I saw Baby Bump!  Evan took our first belly photo of the pregnancy - 14 weeks!
Photobucket

Have a wonderful week!

Bump

Check it out!  It looks like there might be a baby in there! (Now all I need are some pants that fit.)

Desperation

As I type this, Micah has been screaming in his crib for one hour and 6 minutes.  Ever since he was sick a couple weeks back, he sleep has (for lack of a better way to put it) gone straight to hell.  He used to be a champion sleeper.  You'd lay him down and he'd happily pass out and sleep, both for naps and at nighttime.  No problems, no fussing, waking up happy as a clam.

But then he got sick for that week and half or so and suddenly everything changed.  He doesn't go down without a fight and he is waking up constantly.  At first, I attributed it to teething or to feeling icky.  I mean, who doesn't coddle their kids a bit when they're sick?  He's back to being almost totally healthy now, but his sleep is just shot.

I lay him down for his nap at the time he's been going to bed for months and months and all he does is scream for God knows how long.  He stands up, throws his nuk across the room, and screams bloody murder until I come in and lay him back down.  We do this dance over and over.  I'm at one hour and 10 minutes now and I just returned from a trip into his room and I just heard the unmistakable "thump" of the nuk being thrown into the door.

At night, it isn't much better.  Last night, Evan had to endure an hour a a half of screaming before Micah finally fell asleep, and that was only with Evan sitting in the room by him for 15 minutes until he was 100% passed out.  The second he would try to get up and leave while he was awake and Micah would be violently hollering.  Some nights he only wakes up once, but there are nights when he is waking up multiple times and he will have violent fits!  He calms down if you hold him, but goes completely bonkers the moment you stand up to try to lay him down.

He's tired.
I'm tired.
Evan's tired.
Isaiah's sleeping like a champ, thanks for asking.

Help.  I'm totally stuck here because I'm really not sure what to do with this magnitude of sleep trouble at 18 months.  Isaiah never was like this at this age.  It's putting both Evan and I on edge and I'm really worried that if I don't get this sleep problem solved before Evan has to go to China next month, I won't be able to send the kids to my parents and then I'm really up excrement creek without a paddle.

Offer your suggestions, forward this post to the veteran parent you know who has sleep trained orphans in Mongolia....I don't care.  Just help!!

One hour, 14 minutes.  God help me.

Why I'm Not There

Since this whole political firestorm ignited here in Wisconsin, I've had several people ask me if I had been to the state capitol to participate in the protests.  My response is easy:  Not a chance.

Now before you start thinking this means one thing or another in the way of politics, allow me to explain.  My avoidance of the capitol square really has little to do with political opinion.  It has everything to do with a phobia of mine: being stuck in the middle of a massive crowd or mob.

I see videos like this of what's going on at the capitol and I can just feel my skin crawling.

When I was a freshman in college, I attended the Halloween celebrations on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin.  I was attending UW-Madison and a friend of mine was coming from out of town to join in the festivities.  We ended up being among about 75,000 other revelers on the street and I was scared.  It was absolute anarchy and things escalated quickly.  Before I knew it, I was stuck in a solid mob of people who were all pushing toward a large wrought iron fence....and were climbing over it.  I tried to push out of there, but couldn't.  I was being crushed toward this fence and I had countless people pushing against me.  It was at that point that a man in my proximity tried to grab me.  He managed to grope my butt and attempted to cop a feel a bit further north, but he got my fist to his groin before he could do so.  As I turned around, I saw my friend had tripped to the ground and was literally being crushed by the wall of people who continued to move toward the fence.  I managed to pull her up and then we had to scale this huge fence.....in short skirts and heels.  I got stuck at the top when my skirt caught on a spire and eventually fell to the ground on the other side of the fence.  I earned a bruise the size of a dinner plate on my leg.

I don't like crowds.  So, the idea of standing in that capitol rotunda is enough to trigger an anxiety attack.  No thanks!

And just for the record, I avoided State Street on Halloween like the plague every year after that, especially in the years following when rioting and fires broke out.  The city of Madison has since gotten the event under control, but I still don't go anywhere near it at the end of October!

The Shopping Itch

It never fails that as soon as my waistline starts to pop out and my zippers and buttons on my pants are rendered useless, I start to get the itch to shop for maternity clothes.  In fact, I actually busted out my bin of maternity wear the other day started going through it to see if there was anything I could feasibly wear in the near future.  Unfortunately, those of you who have been paying attention know that I dropped a good chuck of weight since the last time I had to don those clothes.  (For a visual reminder, click here.)  I was literally swimming in the maternity pants and tops in that pile.  I found a couple of shirts that will work, but not for several weeks and fuhgetabahtit when it comes to pants.  I was around a size 16 or so when I got pregnant with Micah.  I was just about to break into a size 10 when I got knocked up this time.  Big difference!  I'm not exaggerating when I say that I have very little to wear this pregnancy and I'm starting to run out of time since I am down to only one pair of jeans that I can wear to work and even zipping them is becoming a difficult task.

Hence the itch to shop.  I started poking around on the Old Navy website, my go-to source for maternity clothes in the past.  Have any of you ever ordered maternity clothes from Old Navy?  They have some pretty cute stuff at good prices, but they tend to run a bit big (in my experience) and the quality can sometimes be on the low end.  But heck, you're only wearing the stuff for a couple months, right?

To satisfy my urge to shop without actually spending any money, I whipped up a little mood board of sorts on Polyvore to show you all a couple outfits I really liked from Old Navy Maternity.  Everything on the board is from Old Navy except for the super cute blue earrings.  I just couldn't resist slapping those gorgeous gals on there.

Fun, huh?  I blame The Pioneer Woman for introducing me to that cursed site.  It's addicting, I tell you!  Anyway, finally on to the point of this post.  What are your go-to choices for maternity clothes?  Do you have a favorite store, brand, or item?  How can we go about putting together a maternity wardrobe that keeps us looking cute and feeling comfy on a budget?

Dying to hear your feedback!  (And if you want to go play around on the Polyvore website and put together your own "collection", don't say I didn't warn you.  Ashley, I'm looking at you.)

Project Life Tuesday - March Week One

Hello and welcome to Project Life Tuesday! I am taking a photo every day in 2011 and putting them together in an album to create a unique keepsake of this year for our family.  Be sure to check in on what others are doing with their projects over at The Mom Creative!

Sunday, February 27th - Tonight was supposed to be a date night for Evan and me, but instead I felt terrible so I spent my night on the couch with my two equally sick kids.
Photobucket

Monday, February 28th - This photo really represents the last week and a half or so of our lives.  I'm so ready for it to be over!  (Yes, we do have a wedding photo in our bathroom.)
Photobucket

Tuesday, March 1st - Today I got a brief glimpse of my old Micah.  For a few fleeting moments, he stopped snotting and screaming and actually flashed me a couple smiles from behind that nuk.  Dare I hope that we might be turning the corner?
Photobucket

Wednesday, March 2nd - Strawberries were on sale, so I bought a few and threw together a fun little fruity salad for lunch today.  Paired with a Diet Raspberry Snapple, it made me a happy girl.  Too bad I wanted a Snickers as soon as I was done.
Photobucket

Thursday, March 3rd - I don't know what it is about that little belly peeking out that just gets me, but I think it's so cute.
Photobucket

Friday, March 4th - A true sign that my Micah is starting to feel like his old self - he is sitting off by himself, watching a movie.  He is my independent little guy and would much rather sit in his own space than to cuddle, so I can tell by this photo that he was feeling much better today.
Photobucket

Saturday, March 5th - I know it looks like Evan is torturing Isaiah, but he actually was giggling his little head off while Evan was trying to wipe his face off after supper.
Photobucket

I am so happy that we are finally feeling better in this house!  Thank God!
Have a wonderful week!
