Addicted

Imagine with me for a moment that we are sitting together in a room.  It's probably in the basement of a church or a rec center or something of the like, sporting an emerald green carpet and metal folding chairs that have likely resided here since 1991.  There is a folding banquet table set up in the corner stocked with foam coffee cups next the the metal carafe of slightly better than sludge coffee that was brewed a couple hours ago.  We nervously walk around a bit, clutching our foam cup while we stir in the dash of flavored creamer and packet of Sweet 'n Low, perhaps in an attempt to account for the doughnut we plan on grabbing from the table a little later, you know....if things get to that point.

The room begins to fill and we take our seats, making sure to flip the switch on our phones so that we won't be "that guy" whose loud refrain of Call Me Maybe interrupts the meeting and ends up spiraling the owner into such a horrific panic that they forget where they put their phone and end up just excusing themselves to the hallway, only to disappear forever.

Ringers safely silenced, coffee adequately sweetened, and purse tucked neatly under the cold seat, we begin.  The leader gestures in my direction and with a sweet smile and the tiniest of nods, encourages me to stand and introduce myself.

"Hello," I begin.  "My name is Sarah and I am an addict.  I am addicted to envy."

Envy?

Nope, that's not the street name of some new illicit drug making its way around the mean streets of my middle class suburb.  It's just one of the most devastating weapons that the Enemy uses to wage war in my heart as he covets my soul.

It doesn't take much to get the stirrings of jealousy awoken within me.  A customer at one of my tables sporting a diamond the size of an ice rink, my co-worker who just got a manicure, my neighbor driving by in her tricked out 2013 minivan, a girlfriend who has the most amazing hair.  I scroll through my blog reader and see photos of a dream house being built, complete with a pool that appears to be the size of my house.  I see a woman who is able to travel across the country to attend and speak at blog conferences, enjoying interviews with celebrities and swag bags.  I read the testimony of women who are so RIGHT with the Lord, whose insights into Scripture blow my mind and make me wonder, "What's wrong with me?  Why couldn't I see it that way?"  And I gaze longingly at the images of these beautiful women - wives and mothers just like me - who are able to dress in pretty clothes and fancy shoes while they strut through their day and just ROCK IT OUT.

And the envy appears.  I allow it to brew and steep and eventually bubble over, like a poison overflowing its cauldron.  The resentment follows soon after and I begin to convince myself that I shouldn't have to sit here and feel that way.  Heck, I deserve to have those things too!

This is where I really get myself into trouble.  Instead of digging deeper into the Word, I withdraw.  Instead of cleaning and sprucing up my home to help me feel more satisfied with it, I avoid going to playdates at a fellow mama's house because I'm afraid my kids would mess up her pristine home.  Instead of knowing and believing that God will provide for me more than the lilies of the field, I go and blow our budget on new clothes and the matching guilt.

It's such a vicious cycle.  Envy is a very, very dangerous drug.  It's the gateway to discontentment, selfishness, deceit, and unhealthy indulgence.  Side effects include broken relationships, depression, a distorted view of reality, and greed.

So now I'm going to do what I should have done before I went to the mall and spent money I didn't really have on clothes I didn't really need:  I'm going to turn to God's Word.

Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an INHERITANCE among all those who are sanctified.  I have not coveted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.   (Acts 20: 32-33, emphasis mine)

Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.  Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.  (Romans 13: 13-14, emphasis mine)

And then there was this one.  Friends, this one really made me feel like I had nailed my envy=drug metaphor:

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones(Prov 14:30, emphasis mine)

It seems so simple, doesn't it?  If my heart is at peace and I am content with the blessings the Lord has given me, I am given LIFE.  If I continue to allow envy to flow through my body, it will ROT my bones, slowly destroying me from the inside out.  Like a cancer.  Like a drug.

So this is what I must do.  Instead of coveting the attributes of others to the point that I seek to take them for my own, I must covet God's righteousness and seek his truth above all.  Just as an addict must seek treatment and find ways to cope with their urges to use, I need to seek God's counsel and invite him to fill my heart with the peace that gives life.  Thankfully, Paul lets us know how to go about acquiring a heart at peace in his letter to the Philippians.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.  (Philippians 4:6-7, emphasis mine)

No drug addict can quit on their own, just like that.  When something is so addicting and so dangerous, we desperately need help to give us the strength we need to fight it.  God gives us that strength.

So hi there.  My name is Sarah.  I am an envy addict.  My recovery will not come overnight, but only through daily prayer and petition to my heavenly Father.  I resolve to seek out the abundant blessings that surround me and to approach his throne in thanksgiving.  I will request that he help me to trust him to provide for our needs and for the strength to keep envy at bay and be satisfied with what he chooses to bestow.  Slowly, peace and life I can only find in Christ Jesus will replace the rot and death I have been finding in Envy.

Meeting adjourned.  Now, who wants a doughnut?

P.S.  Yes, I realize the irony in publishing this post after my Stitch Fix post on Monday.  Believe me, it isn't a coincidence.  ;)

What I Wore Wednesday - Polka Dot Blouse

Sorry about missing last week's WIWW post.  I think I was feeling a bit frumpified by the lack of new photos to share with you, so I opted to just skip it.  I think I need to get better about just taking the photos, regardless of whether I think it's the sassiest outfit ever or not.

Today I am sharing a collection of outfits that I wore using my polka dot blouse.  I found this blouse on the clearance rack at The Limited and it's been a really fun piece to have in my closet.  I have LOVED it with some outfits and others....not so much.

Polka dot blouse - The Limited, Purple cardigan - LOFT, Leopard print belt - The Limited, Hudson Jeans - Macy's, Black boots - no clue (had 'em forever)

Ok, so this blouse.  It had this tie/ruffle/thingy in the front that adds a very feminine touch.  Love it.  But, I think it needs to be grounded in something a but more structural than this cardigan.  A blazer, perhaps?

Turquoise cords - LOFT, same belt and blouse, Black flats - Payless

This one was a swing and a miss.  I thought it could make this blouse work with my turquoise cords, but it really didn't.  I think my midsection ended up looking much too heavy.

Mustard Sweater - The Limited, same blouse, same jeans and boots as top photo

In my opinion, this outfit worked the best.  It was slimming, yet the polka dot blouse peeking out from underneath the sweater provided some visual interest.  Unfortunately, the sweater is just sheer enough that you can see the polka dots through it, so it does look a bit goofy up close.  Plus, I just feel like it needs a bit more color.

That's all I've got with that blouse so far, but I'm determined to find an outfit that makes it look fabulous.  Any ideas?

Project Life Tuesday - Week 1

The Mom CreativeWelcome to Project Life Tuesday!

It's finally here....the first week from 2013 with the gorgeous new Seafoam Kit!  I'm thrilled to share it with you!  Just so we're clear here, folks...I am not a "fancy scrapbooker."  There are so many people out there doing some very impressive things with their Project Life albums that involve a combination of digital skills, pretty embellishments, and other fancy-pants techniques.  I'm not one of those.  I keep it pretty simple so that I know I can keep up and avoid becoming overwhelmed.  To me, it's more important to keep the memories than it is to make them look like they came out of a magazine.

I do like to have fun with it though.  :)

If you're looking for inspiration on what others are doing with their Project Life, you can check out my board on Pinterest and be sure to link up on The Mom Creative!

Psssst.....Did you see the video last week that shared the end of my 2012 album?  If not, you can check it out here!

Week 1

I thought briefly about waiting until the new kits come out in May to start my album, but I am so glad I decided to move ahead with the Seafoam kit.  It's such a departure from my comfort zone, but I love it!

I decided to number the weeks on my date cards this year, something I haven't done before.  Of course, this means I'm going to have to go shopping for more Thickers.  :)

Speaking of Thickers.....

Here's a little Instagram from the day of the Rose Bowl I mounted on a grid card with some washi.

Moving on to the right page:

I documented the time I spent working on my 2012 album.  Nothing like putting Project Life into Project Life!

I used two different Cathy Z templates for these two bottom 4x6 spots:

One of my favorite things to document in Project Life is the everyday stuff.  I used a screen shot from one of our favorite TV shows and I mounted it on a grid card with a couple strips of washi.  Anyone else addicted to this show?  Please tell me I'm not alone.

And yes, I am aware that I spelled apocalypse wrong and I did originally write 2012.  Just keeping it real.

This card below just cracks me up.  I took this photo of the treadmill when I finished my workout and I about died laughing when I saw what was on the closed captioning on the screen.  It matched perfectly with my zombie screen shot!

I did goof up a bit and used the 1/2" rounder setting on my new corner rounder for these photos, but I have corrected that to the 1/4" size for Week 2 so it matches the PL kit cards better.

I started to tinker around with the title page a bit, but it is most certainly still a work in progress.  Here's what is looking like so far:

Lots of work to do on it yet.  I'm really excited about how it's going to come together though.  See you next week!

Getting "Fixed."

Let's just get this out of the way right now.  Yes, we are done having children.  No, we are not planning on any vasectomies or any permanent "fixes" at any point in the near future.

That's not what this post is about, so you can breathe easy!

Today I want to write about clothes.  I've been posting some What I Wore Wednesday posts for a little while now and as much as I have appreciated all the positive comments about my wardrobe, I must confess that I still have very little clue what I am doing when it comes to dressing myself.

When I was in The Limited a while back, I took three things into the dressing room and hated them all.  When the super-fab attendant asked how things went and I gave him the pouty response of, "No go on any of it," he took pity on me and asked if he could pull a few items that he thought would work.  I figured I would go for it because clearly I was no good at this!

Want proof?

I posted the photo above on Twitter while in the dressing room in desperate plea for help!  I actually ended up buying the sweater, but what was I thinking with that vest?  Oy.  Embarassing.

So I accepted help.  That sassy little fella (whose name I believe was Nathan) scampered all over that place and brought me a ton of things to try on.  And you know what?  His choices were WAY more successful than mine had been!  I wish I had more photos to share with you, but I felt creepy about taking more pictures in the dressing room and I only ended up buying the red sweater above and two of the pieces he suggested for me.  You've probably seen them together already - this asymmetrical sweater and belt:

Anyway, what's the point of all this?  I am admitting that I need HELP.  When I wander around a clothing store aimlessly, I grab things that I think will look good and most of the time I am wrong.  When I ask for the assistance of more knowledgeable people, their choices inevitable strike a better chord, even if at first glace the items are not what I would have picked up.

Knowing this, I stumbled across a little company called Stitch Fix.  I kept seeing the lovely Raechel Myers posting outfits on Instagram that made me drool.  Every time I would freak out over the cuteness factor of an outfit, she would cite it as coming from Stitch Fix, so I was intrigued.

Stitch Fix is, in a nutshell, exactly what a clueless gal like me dreams about.  It is an online personal styling service that assigns you a real live personal stylist based on your responses to an extensive questionnaire about your size, tastes, and particular style preferences.  Once you have expressed what kind of clothes you like, what styles you are interested in trying, and chosen your budget range, you get to wait eagerly for your "Fix" to arrive in the mail!  (Raise your hand if you love getting fun mail as much as I do!)

Shipping is FREE both ways and when your box of goodies arrives, you get to sort through the items your stylist chose for you and try them on in the privacy and comfort of your home.  What you want to keep, you keep!  What you want to send back, you just re-pack in the inclosed envelope and pop it in your mailbox.  You fill out a review of your items so your stylist can tweak what they send to you next time.

How amazing does that sound?

For someone who struggles to find time to get to the mall and wander like a lost puppy dog for an hour only to come up empty-handed, I knew this was something I had to try.

So I signed up.

There is currently a little waiting list since they only add a certain number of clients at a time, but I was excited to get notified that it was my turn!  I filled out my style profile and wrote some notes about what kind of clothes I have found I like.  I was even able to include my Twitter handle and a link to my style board on Pinterest to help my stylist further understand my style.  I loved looking at these collections of clothes and rating how I liked them:

Fun, right?

After I completed my style profile, I made notes to my stylist that I wanted to find some classic, versatile pieces that would easily transition from winter to spring.  I also mentioned it might be nice to find something pretty for a romantic Valentine's Day date night.  ;)  As for my budget range, I chose "As cheap as possible" for pretty much every single category.  Because I'm cheap.  Clueless and cheap.

And then I just had to schedule my Fix!  You pay a $20 styling fee up front and then schedule when your Fix will come.  When your box arrives, you can apply that $20 toward anything in the box.  So, if I am sent a fabulous top priced at $45, it will come down to $25.  Plus, if you decide to buy everything in the box, you get it all at a 25% discount.  (Although I highly doubt I will be taking advantage of that deal too often.)

Oh, and it is NOT a required subscription!  I was very careful to read the fine print and make sure I wasn't accidentally signing up for a service that would charge me every month if I wasn't using it.  Nope, you can schedule your Fixes for as often as monthly or just try it out that one time and then never do it again.  Good to know!

So, now I wait!  My box of goodies should be coming the first week in February and I can't wait to share it all with you.  Does Stitch Fix sound like something you might like to try out with me? Sign up now and get on the waiting list so you won't be stuck anxiously wanting your own Fix after I share mine!  The link I've been using is my own personal referral link which helps earn me credit toward my own Fixes as well, so if you want to give it a shot, would you mind clicking through this link? The fashionista buried within me certainly thanks you.

I'm looking forward to showing you what Stitch Fix sends me!  It should be fun!

Rushed Home

Earlier today my Grandma Shirley had a heart attack and went downhill pretty quickly.  This afternoon, she went to Heaven.

Grandma Shirley looks on as Micah John blows out the candles at his 2nd birthday party (2011)
My Grandma Shirley was not a biological grandmother, but she was a part of our family in every sense of the word.  When my mother landed in foster care in her adolescent years, Shirley and her husband Nick became her foster parents and they cared for her in a way my mother had never experienced.  Even after my mother grew up and had a family of her own, Shirley and Nick remained a part of her life.

When Grandpa Nick died, I was too young to have really had a relationship with him, so it didn't affect me very much.  It's different with Grandma Shirley.  I remember bragging to my friends in elementary school that I had an extra grandma, which made me extra special.  Every Christmas, birthday, and special occasion, I could count on Grandma Shirley to be there.  She celebrated with me when my children we born, spoiling them just as heartily as their other grandparents.  In face, the purple Leap Pad 2 she gave them for Christmas is still sitting on my washing machine, waiting for me to get an email from Walmart that they have a green one in stock I can exchange it for.  My boys said the purple one was, "for girls."

Every parent my mother has ever known is now gone.  She was holding Shirley's hand today as her spirit left her and rushed home.  My heart hurts for her.

Thank you for Shirley, Father in Heaven.  Thank you for bringing her and Grandpa Nick into my mother's life when she needed it the most. I know you have welcomed Grandma Shirley into your Kingdom today and I pray that you would be with my mother and my aunts as they grieve her loss.  Hold them as they hold one another.  Comfort them as they shed tears.  We praise you today Father, for you are good and you are still on the throne.  Help us to turn to you as we mourn.  Amen.

Unstoppable

As I type this post, I have the toe of my boot wrapped around the kitchen chair next to me and I'm hearing a consistent screeching noise out of my wee one.  Why, you might ask?

This is why:

Unless I keep that chair firmly secured with my foot, the little buggar pulls it out and climbs on top of it, only to set his sights on loftier goals and mount the kitchen table.  And so far no amount of firm toned, "No Thomas!" is doing a lick of good.

If anyone has any brilliant ideas on how to keep my baby from climbing up on the table, pushing every single button in the house, opening every single door, pulling every single item off shelves, ruining every single magazine, or rip pages out of every single book.....I'm all ears.

You would think I would have a better handle on this stage by my third child, but apparently I am just as clueless as a rookie!

To make up for the headache he had caused me with his table-climbing antics, Thomas enlisted the help of his brothers two superheroes to help tidy up a bit.

I'm just grateful he didn't stick the mop-head in his mouth at any point. And I know it freaks my mother in law out that Thomas isn't wearing any socks, but I swear to you....the child takes them off immediately.  Apart from keeping shoes on him all day long, there's not much I can do to keep him from going barefoot all the time.

There also seems to be little I can do to keep him from trying to eat the remote controls.

He's going to be twice as mischievous as his older brothers put together, mark my words.

Project Life Tuesday - Week 41 to the End of 2012! VIDEO

The Mom CreativeWelcome to Project Life Tuesday!

This is a BIG post.  It's going to cover a couple MONTHS worth of Project Life layouts.  If you're new to this scrapbooking method or just exploring around to get a taste of what the fuss is all about, you've picked a good day to drop by.

Today I have a video for you that shows the rest of my 2012 book that shows you everything from the last post all the way up to the end.  It's a bit lengthy (sorry 'bout that), but I'm so thrilled to have the year's book DONE.  Now I can get all fired up to start on 2013 with Seafoam!

Plus, if you keep scrolling down past the video, you will see the photos of my weeks 41-42 which is where I pick up in the video.  It should have you all caught up on my entire 2012 album.

If you're looking for inspiration on what others are doing with their Project Life, you can check out my board on Pinterest and be sure to link up on The Mom Creative!

Weeks 41-42 of 2012:

Lots of photos from these weeks because I ended up with a lot of inserts!

A very fun layout this week.  Evan was away in China and the kids got their school photos taken.

How cute is that tough guy fireman face?

I used a vertical 5x7 insert to showcase school photos for Isaiah and Micah (even though Micah isn't technically in school).

And the next week....

Three inserts this week: two horizontal 5x7 pages and a 6x12.

I layered the horizontal insert on top of the tall one so I could see them both easily.

The 5x7 insert holds Micah's name tag from his field trip to the zoo, but it was a little bit too big for the space.  I taped it to some double sided cardstock to hold it in place then used some washi tape to close up the opening at the top.  The flip side is a 4x6 journaling card mounted to the cardstock that tells the story of Micah's adventures.

For this 6x12 insert, I wanted to include two blog posts, one on each side.  I used an Instagram photo at the top and then created a 6x10 document.  I printed them out on my normal sized white cardstock and added a little designer paper and washi to the bottom to make it fit in the page protector.

And then the next insert is just a couple of my favorite shots from this little fall photo shoot I did in the front yard.

As for the right page, I just used a Design D and filled up every spot with photos because there were so many I loved!

Whew!  There we go!  The rest of the 2012 album is finished and shared with you all.  I hope you have enjoyed sharing Project Life with me and I've already got my new Seafoam 2013 album in the works.  Let's get moving with a brand new year!

Temporarily Sassy

Not gonna lie, folks.  I've started and erased a new post at least three times now.  I'm kind of at a loss about what to share with you.

I could tell you about a secret project I've been working on all morning, but then the wrong people would read all about it and my secret would be ruined!  Can't wait to let you all in on it though.

Isaiah didn't have school today so I originally thought about taking the kids to the zoo to get some inaugural use out of our freshly purchased zoo pass, but then I realized it was going to be so cold today that staying inside in comfy clothes under a snuggly blanket sounded much more alluring.  So, instead we have been watching Veggie Tales videos and playing with dominoes.  And working on a secret project, of course.  :)

I will confess to you that I am putting off taking a shower as long as possible because I want to preserve my new hairstyle for a couple more days.  Here's the before.....

and the AFTER!

As you can see, I was long overdue for a cut and then my brand new stylist asked if I wanted her to style it curly or if I would like it flat ironed.  Since I haven't seen my hair straight in several years, I figured I would go for it!

If I'm being perfectly honest, I was feeling pretty sassy most of the day after I left the salon.  I took more "selfies" on my phone than usual so I apologize if you follow me on Instagram and you were suddenly bombarded by photos like this:

and this:

And if I'm being really, REALLY honest....I'd have to tell you that I totally had the song "I'm Sexy and I Know It" running through my head as I snapped the photo above.  So you see, the longer I can put off that shower, the longer I can hang on to this sleek hairstyle that had people doing double-takes all weekend.

It made a girl feel good.

I'll go away now and come back when I'm back to my somewhat frumpy yet much more humble state.  I've still got a bit too much strut in my step to be comfortable being a mommy blogger right now.

Hambone?

As we prepare for the NFC and AFC championship games, I thought this would be appropriate.  Since I can no longer cheer on my beloved Green Bay Packers, I could use a little cheering up.

Even if you don't like football, do yourself a favor and WATCH THIS.

Feel free to shout out your favorite part in the comments! Was it Adrian Peterson's orange peanut? Perhaps Peyton's Manning's magic potion? Or maybe Tom Brady's declaration of whiteness?  For once, I can actually relate to Coach Harbaugh's desire for cake RIGHT NOW!

Brilliant.

Happy weekend, kids.

Superpowers

My son thinks he is Iron Man.

Lately he has been spending about 80% of his waking hours at our home wearing this suit.  There are holes ripped in it, the velcro is coming off, and I'm sure he can barely see out of that mask.  But, everyday without fail, the moment comes where he comes up to me and holds out the clump of stretched red fabric and plead with me, "Mommy you help me put on Iron Man suit?"

Obviously the fascination with superheroes is in my boys' DNA sequence.  As you'll recall, I threw a mega superhero bash for their combined birthday party in November that they felt was pretty much the coolest day ever.  Well, next to any day they spend at Grandma's house....or the zoo....or the waterpark.  Come to think of it, I guess they just liked getting presents.  Mommy - 0.  Presents - 1.

Of course, it doesn't just stop at Iron Man.

There was the failed attempt to become The Amazing Spiderman.

And who could forget the day when Superman tormented his brothers rescued helpless citizens from certain destruction.

Boys have a power inside them.  I can see it building in them already, especially in my three year old.  On top of it all, Micah is HUGE for his age so he is trying to figure out how to deal with a physical strength as well as a desire within himself to show fortitude, bravery, and aggression.  He is the one who usually gets the time out for hitting, pushing, kicking, or tackling.  He is also the one who pretends to shoot bursts of energy out his palms and perform his own variation of Kung Fu in the living room akin to a certain panda.

It's adorable, but it also makes me keenly aware that I'm going to have a real struggle on my hands as this boy grows up.  If he keeps being so big and strong for his age, we are really going to have to work to help him channel that power into something constructive (sports, martial arts, underwater basket weaving) versus something destructive (bullying, fighting, violent video games, smashing dishes at a Greek wedding celebration).

But God made this boy STRONG.  He is going to be a force to be reckoned with.  He will be a man of conviction and passion.  He may need to be reminded to do something four times, but once he decides to actually do it....there will be no stopping him.  And woe to he who gets in his way.  I pray that I can help him learn how to use his power to bring glory to God rather than as a way to puff up his own ego among his own peers.

In the meantime, he's still afraid of the bear in Brave, so I think I've got time before I have to worry about him terrorizing the neighbor kids.

What I Wore Wednesday - Skinny Jeans Edition

One of the popular wardrobe items of the past year that I thought I would never, EVER be able to wear had me frightened off by its name alone:

SKINNY JEANS.

In my head, that meant that these particular pants were by definition only for very skinny people.  Made sense to me!  But then I started seeing more and more people wearing them, normal people even!  I was seeing "skinny jeans" in the stores in size 12, 14, 18!  Ok....so really women can actually wear these things and make them look good?  Interesting.

I went on a quest.  I tried on several pairs of these things and struggled to find some that looked flattering both on my thighs and my butt.  Plus, it was hard for me to get past the whole "tight on my ankles" thing because it went against every grain of fashion wisdom I had ever soaked in from watching What Not to Wear while I nursed a newborn and wore pajama pants and a ratty t-shirt covered in spit up.

Eventually, I found a pair at NY & Company that worked for me and I had them hemmed a bit.  I believe they are the "Curvy Skinny" cut....whatever that means.

Skinny Jeans - NY & Company, Boots - b.o.c. (gifted), Green sweater - The Limited

Same jeans and boots, Sweater and Belt - The Limited

I still have a hard time getting my head around how teeny that top/belt combo makes my waist look.

Same jeans and boots, Blue Sweater - Target, Yellow Infinity Scarf - gift from sister in law

Same jeans, Leopard flats - Target, Striped top - GAP outlet, Feather Necklace - Lisa Leonard Designs

I wore the outfit above to my sister's baby shower.  I think my grandmother was confused.

Same jeans, Comfy boots - Target from a LONG LONG time ago, Pink striped tank - GAP outlet, Brown cardi - Target

Sorry this one is blurry!  This was just a comfy quick outfit for running around with the kids on a cold day.  Comfy comfy comfy but not frumpy frumpy frumpy.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
